Zest | Title Sponsor of 2014 Swing for Education

Zest makes $10,000 donation to Education Foundation for Baltimore County Public Schools and MANSEF through sponsoring Swing for Education Annual Golf Classic.

We have had the privilege to work closely with Debbie Phelps and the Education Foundation for Baltimore County Public Schools for the past few years. The experience has been nothing short of outstanding, and so this year we began exploring ways to further contribute to the organization as it continues to do great things within our community.

That opportunity materialized in having Zest serve as the title sponsor for the Swing for Education Golf Classic hosted by The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools and the Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities (MANSEF).

This year’s event will be a special one, as the tournament will also include a ceremony honoring Aris Melissarators for his substantial contributions to the local education community. Mr. Melissaratos serves as the Dean of the Brown School of Business and Leadership at Stevenson University, and has been a major supporter of the growth of the Education Foundation for Baltimore County Public Schools. We are very fortunate in Baltimore County to have the support of leaders such as Mr. Melissaratos as well as the event’s honorary chairs Louis and Nancy Grasmick and dozens of other businessmen and women who have embraced the civic duty of supporting our school system. They have set an example that is worth following.

The Swing for Education Golf Classic embodies one of the primary functions of the Education Foundation, as it highlights the incredible importance for synergy and collaboration between our local business community and the local education community. As ordinary as charity golf outings may seem, it cannot be emphasized enough as to the huge value provided by such a seemingly small gesture of spending a day on the links in support of such a good cause. This event will bring together hundreds of local professionals who will be helping to enhance the quality of the education system that harvests the people who now may be our children, or our coworker or neighbor’s children today, but tomorrow will be our own neighbors, coworkers, and business leaders.

This community in Baltimore County is exceptional for our public school system. We must remember that it is dependent on us as much as we are dependent on it. We benefit from BCPS in so many ways, which is made evident when looking at our residential property values, local GDP, and other metrics in comparison with that of neighboring counties and neighboring states. It is our important civic duty to continue to support the advancement of BCPS so that it remains a national leader among school systems. We will all benefit individually should we collectively embrace that as a responsibility, and the evidence will be the growth of the value of our homes in part with being districted to top graded schools, the reduction of poverty around our neighborhoods, and a stronger local workforce and economy to support our businesses.

A Towson High School graduate of 2007, I was one of those students just a few short years ago. As were several others who have worked to build this company. Zest Social Media Solutions is a byproduct of this school system in more ways than it is not. Twice a college dropout, my education as a student of Baltimore County Public Schools and experience gained from this community served as the foundation I used to help build our company. Zest’s $10,000 donation would not be possible without BCPS, and serves as a testament to the organization’s importance in this modern era of education. The landscape for education is changing dramatically, as higher education struggles to adapt to an economy that requires more skills from college graduates yet offers less in financial compensation and certainty than past generations. The next generation of primary education students must be more financially savvy and cognizant of the economy, as it will not be capable of supporting the continued growth of national debts for student loans.

It is with great pride that Zest is able to support such an outstanding organization.  In addition to our sponsorship, Zest has also created an annual scholarship of $1,000 supporting the BCPS Career and Technology Education department. The scholarship will be awarded to a student or students interested in pursuing entrepreneurship having demonstrated excellence in the county’s internship or work-study programs.
